Where can you find jobs in the commercial sector?
lol word of mouth. Thats where most the jobs are and that’s why networking is key. All of my freelance work has been through networking and referral’s. So have my job offers. I gained my internship with Din + Bloom by approaching them. I got my job at Linen House by approaching them. Linen House didn’t’ even have a summer job advertised, I called the retail manger and asked if there was work. tHere was. So i got the job.
Cold calling can be terrifying but so far i’ve had more luck with that than with applying for jobs with seek. Back in 2014 I sent out a mailer to my fave design agencies/studio in Melbourne. This m ailer included a poster, resumed, stickers and postcard. It was curated for each studio. I received a response from about a third of them. Far higher than any response for job applications. Designer mailers don’t appear to be as common in the textile industry. Maybe because it’s (relatively) less competitive. Only so many graduates come out of RMIT with a textile degree as as opposed to the hundreds with graphic design degrees across all the uni’s.
What are the most successful websites for job seeking in each area?
Seek and linkedin.
What are the key search words to use?
For me. None. I browse EVERYTHING under ‘design’ or ‘creative’ jobs. As my skill set covers web, design and textiles I can’t risk missing a job by search for certain key words.
What are the opportunities and what are the challenges?
Opportunities you mostly need to make for yourself. Challenges is dealing with rejection, not hearing back from any one and nailing your interview.
Below) Two last emails I got from seek showing my jobs in the design sectors. I’ve been signed up for this mailing list for the last 5 years. Always keeping my eye out for potential jobs/opportunities.
