Does technological development drive innovation in design?
Well it certainly drives design trends. When certain software first came out (it might of been adobe? or something before it) it allowed designers to easily create vector gradients. As a result there was an explosion of print designs with gradients, mostly logo. It easily time stamped these logos to belong to the early 90’s. Again with the introduction of fonts into computers. We’ve all seen the papyrus logo used for every candle/incense/vegan store. I think there are two in my hometown. So theses are the negative results of new technology on print design.
Or does inventiveness in design inspire technology?
I can’t think of an example. Will come back if I do.
Relate this to your own approach to design – how does having a clear understanding of textile properties and processes inform your design decisions?
Yup. For example I would not create detailed designs for screen print as out screens are 42 lpi (or something). If I had access to a higher resolution (? density? ) screen then I could draw far more detailed motifs.
My designs for print need to have simple colour palette as I have access to only 2 screens, there is only so much layering and colour mixing you can do.
