In regards to writing your folio brief/career direction document, how are you progressing?
I’ve always had a set plan for what i want to do. As to writing it, lol, not done it. Knowing me i’ll do it the night before. I want a beautiful printed portfolio however i know convenience trumps quality every time. I need a folio that I can update on the spot. Because of my background i could be walking into a design, web, or textile interview and my folio needs to reflect that. Plus I have design work that is conservative and dosing work that is more playful and fun, both of which would change depending on the job. So no matter what folio i come up with it has to be one i can easy adapt and change.
What has been the most challenging part of thinking about and explain your design methods and practise
Nothing? It’s easy for me. I start in photoshop and i finish in photoshop. Having a wacom cintiq . (image attached below)vI can draw straight on the computer.
with over 14 years experience i can paint in such a way its hard to tell the difference between a natural medium and digital. I’m always asked “how did you do that?’ and all i can say is photoshop. Then hey ask “well, what brush did you use?” the standard brush (i get this question online a lot, and i think many people believe there is some magic brush that just paints for you or fixes everything. Rarely i will use custom brushes and a lot of my paintings used the good, old standard brush with the opacity at 75% and the flow at 25%, and thats it. Everything is painted by hand straight into the program. So annotating my work is relatively simple. I don’t use paints, or play with layers ( i barely use layers in photoshop and there are many reasons for why i don’t).
What are your expectations of this activity are they reasonable?
It seems pretty straightforward. To date i’ve made several portfolio before. It’s always getting a good layout that i like and consistent style that i won’t hate after a month. thats the hard part. Defining your brand/aesthetic for years to come and not changing it on whim. I’ve managed to stick with the same aesthetic since my graphic designs days and i still don’t hate it so i guess im good.
have you developed a weekly plan to make sure your are on track?
yes, but knowing me its doesn’t mean a lot.
